In this role, you will be responsible for collaborating with data scientists, medical professionals, underwriters, product developers and other actuaries to obtain, develop and analyze data, prove/disprove hypotheses, create reports/dashboards, and develop insights in the risk selection and product profitability spaces. You will consult with divisional leaders and other customers to develop business requirements and provide possible solutions to their analytics and reporting needs. You will work very independently and will be expected to be proactive about opportunities to further analysis that will help the New Business/Underwriting and Insurance Solutions teams achieve their goals. You may train, mentor and provide work direction to less experienced staff members. You’ll develop an understanding of Thrivent’s products, processes, systems and data. You’ll ensure Thrivent remains a responsible user of data.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborates with technical resources, business resources and business owners to provide data analysis and insights to business partners based on detailed analysis, often leveraging advanced statistics. Evaluates new data sources for their use in automated and accelerated underwriting. Partners with leaders in the enterprise on client experience and advisor experience research/metrics, including voice of customer and voice of advisor work.
- Conducts complex SQL queries and works with other data extraction, reporting and analytic tools to validate and/or develop analysis and reporting to provide insight.
- Develops plans to evaluate hypotheses/questions, measure performance, and /or produce models and data. Develops the business case for emerging underwriting and risk product capabilities. Collects competitive intelligence on relevant business capabilities.
- Partners with business, IT and customers to ensure that the design, execution, presentation, and distribution of actionable insights or data streams can be readily implemented and meets management requirements.
- Leads medium to large sized projects and collaborates, trains, and mentors other analysts as needed.
- Performs complex modeling, data mining and analysis projects, using a variety of corporate software tools, that inform and support corporate stakeholders. Evaluates/models data utilizing accepted advanced statistical methods. Build dashboards for automated, accelerated and traditional underwriting business.
- Performs regular procedures such as preparing scheduled reports. Often produces new analytics, dashboards and reports, given this position is on a brand-new team.
- Works with a diverse business community to document as-is and to-be business processes.
Required Job Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics, statistics, management information systems, actuarial science, or equivalent experience required.
- 5+ years of experience in financial services and/or research and analytics or 4+ years of experience in the actuarial field.
- Advanced skill in using analytics tools (such as SAS, SPSS, Minitab, R, etc.) in a corporate environment.
- Advanced skill in design and execution of complex statistical modeling and testing involving linear and non-linear regression techniques (e.g. CHAID, CART, ANOVA, MANOVA, LOGISTIC, TTEST etc.).
- Advanced skill with relational databases, data warehousing, data mining and OLAP.
- Advanced skill in experimental design and impact assessment.
- Solid business acumen working with insurance or investment environments.
- Demonstrated ability to tailor key insights and messages appropriately for audience (senior leader, line manager, etc.).
- Able to work at both a conceptual and detail level with strong statistical data analysis skills, problem solving and decision-making skills.
- Able to translate strategic business logic into technical report requirements and schema design.
- Efficient and effective communications skills with key business partners, tailored to client needs and expectations.
- Effective in leading less experienced resources in large project work, providing assistance in consulting, design, implementation, and/or communication.
Preferred Job Qualifications
- Experience with Python, R or Java
- Experience with Machine Learning and Predictive Analytics.
- 2+ years of experience with PowerBI or similar dashboarding tool.
- 2+ years of experience with SQL.
- Strong attention to detail, excellent organizational, planning and problem-solving skills.
- Able to work with a sense of urgency on multiple projects simultaneously.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, within a stated objective.
- Able to utilize technology to create reports and/or secure information necessary for decision making in a manner that is readily consumable by customers.
