Industry Pushes Back on Nasaa’s Proposed Curb on ‘Advisor’ Title

The North American Securities Administrators Association‘s proposal to restrict the use of the “advisor” title is facing pushback from the financial services industry while consumer and investor advocacy groups throw their support behind the measure.
In November, Nasaa published a request for comment regarding re-proposed changes to its model rule on Dishonest or Unethical Business Practices Of Broker-Dealers And Agents, which aimed to incorporate the Securities and Exchange Commission‘s Regulation Best Interest and bar “misleading uses of the title ‘advisor’ or ‘adviser'” — something Nasaa first floated in 2023.
