Oh my, Suze Orman...’Should I Cash Out My Annuity?’ Suze Orman Reveals Why This Listener’s Investment Isn’t As Good As It Seems
People who look at annuities as investments, and not insurance, make me want to bang my head against a wall.
In this situation, why didn’t Suze ask if the annuity purchaser needed to have a paycheck each month, for the rest of her life?
You cannot make a recommendation to cash surrender an annuity, without seeing if the annuity still meets the needs of the purchaser.
Assuming this is an indexed annuity that was purchased, and not a variable annuity, a 5.4% annualized return is not bad! This is especially true when you consider how low rates have been over the past six years. In short- it isn’t “horrific.”
Again- why compare the annuity’s performance to the S&P 500? The annuity is insurance; it isn’t intended to perform favorably against the market, itself.
The more I hear this woman’s advice, the less I believe she is knowledgeable about annuities.
Just sayin’. -sjm
