Retirement, Roller Coasters And Annuities

Most people, kids and adults included, enjoy thrill rides and roller coasters. They offer a rush of adrenaline and excitement while also feeding an individual’s willingness – or desire – to accept risk into their life.
As a Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA®) charterholder, I believe there are several parallels between a roller coaster and a person’s retirement journey. Both have long, winding paths that tend to twist, turn, or spin in different directions (sometimes sharply or unexpectedly) with varying levels of uncertainty that a person routinely evaluates. And, as people age, their risk tolerance and ability to manage the ups and downs typically decreases.
