Director of Human Resources: Axonic Insurance Services

Summary:
Axonic Insurance Services (AIS), the insurance division of an NYC-based asset management firm, is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Director of Human Resources. This individual will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer and lead all aspects of HR strategy, operations, and compliance.
This role requires a hands-on leader who can balance strategic thinking with tactical executions supporting onboarding, employee relations, compliance, benefits, and organizational development. The Director will play a critical role in shaping the culture and infrastructure of a growing and dynamic firm.
Responsibilities:
• Build and cultivate an inclusive, performance-driven culture aligned with AIS’s business objectives.
• Oversee compliance tracking for mandatory and optional training, certifications, licensure, and assessments. This may include safety training, anti- harassment training, professional licensure, and aptitude exams and certifications.
• Manage end-to-end recruitment processes; partner with hiring managers to define role requirements and identify top talent.
• Conduct background checks and verify employment eligibility.
• Design and execute onboarding and employee engagement programs.
• Serve as a primary point of contact for employment- related inquiries; escalate complex matters appropriately.
• Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws; regularly review and update policies.
• Advise leadership on HR best practices and support disciplinary action, unemployment claims, workers’ compensation, and leaves of absence.
• Lead ongoing training and development initiatives to support employee growth.
• Drive adoption and execution of HR programs and initiatives.
• Partner with Finance on payroll operations as needed.
• Coach managers on policy interpretation, performance management, and employee development.
• Ensure consistent and fair application of company policies across departments.
• Provide updates and guidance on regulatory changes and internal procedures.
• Perform other related duties as needed to support business priorities.
Job Requirements
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive HR experience; SHRM-CP/SCP or SPHR certification preferred.
- Proven experience managing the full scope of HR operations in a dynamic environment.
- Strong understanding of HRIS, talent management systems, and data-driven HR strategy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict-resolution abilities.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail and time management.
- Capable of managing multiple priorities and working independently.
- Sound judgment, discretion, and a high degree of professionalism.
- In-depth knowledge of employment laws and compliance standards.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and HR software platforms.
