New York Life Enters the Fixed-Indexed Annuity Market – for Real This Time
August 19, 2025 by Cyril Tuohy
New York Life sold $1.6 billion in variable annuities in the first quarter, according to industry researcher Wink, publisher of Wink‘s Sales & Market Report.
“Holy buckets,” wrote Wink CEO Sheryl Moore, of New York Life’s debut of the IndexFlex Fixed Annuity series. “H*ll has frozen over.”
Moore noted that nearly 20 years ago, New York Life warned its agents against selling indexed life and indexed annuities.
New York Life was not comfortable with the fact that rates can change on these products, Moore said, and New York Life’s introduction of a fixed-indexed annuity is a “really big deal.”
“I would surmise that they developed this new indexed annuity product out of demand by their financial institution clients,” she said.
New York Life, founded in the mid-19th Century, follows 116-year-old Mutual of Omaha into the product segment. The Nebraska-based mutual launched its first fixed-indexed annuity in July.
Last year, sales of the product line rose 34% from the year before to $130 billion, Wink reported.
