Why Model Portfolios Are All the Rage with FIAs

…At least nine insurers now offer fixed-indexed annuities that come with asset allocation models, according to market tracker Wink. They include Athene, the nation’s top annuity seller last year; Nationwide, a legacy carrier; and Talcott Financial Group, a new retail market entrant.
Five years ago, the list was limited to three or four carriers developing annuities with the help of product designer Annexus, according to Sheryl Moore, CEO of Wink. In 2011 there were only two carriers using model portfolios.
Moore said one reason this may be happening is because indexed annuities have changed so much over the past 14 years, growing in number and complexity. Some companies offer upward of 30 different indexing options on a single annuity, Moore said.
“There are 259 different indices that consumers can earn their indexed interest from on indexed annuities,” she said. “How does any agent, much less a prospect, understand the multitude of these choices and which is ‘best?'”
