Athene employees distribute coats, boots to more than 1,500 students

Nearly 100 employees of Athene USA, led by CEO Grant Kvalheim, are distributing new coats and hats this week to more than 1,500 Des Moines elementary students at four of the city’s neediest schools.
It’s the 24th year that the West Des Moines-based annuity company has donated and distributed winter gear to Des Moines schools. Every student at each of the schools — Cattell, McKinley, Howe, and Studebaker elementary schools — will get properly fitted coats and boots, which Athene’s foundation purchased at a discount from J.C. Penney and Shoe Carnival. Nearly 95 percent of the students qualify for free or reduced lunches, indicating those schools serve some of Des Moines’ families who have the most need for this support.
“The joy and excitement we see from students when we give them a new coat and pair of boots is gratifying,” Kvalheim said. “Our employees at Athene look forward to this event all year. It is a tangible way we can provide for the basic needs of children and their families in our community and make an immediate difference.”
