Horace Mann CFO Dwayne Hallman Dies

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Horace Mann Educators Corp. Chief Financial Officer Dwayne Hallman, 54, has died following a short hospitalization.
The company said he had suffered a severe medical incident Jan. 29 and was on medical leave. It appointed Bret Conklin, controller and chief accounting officer, as acting chief financial officer.
On Feb. 4, the company announced Hallman’s death. “We are greatly saddened by Dwayne’s untimely passing,” said President and Chief Executive Officer Marita Zuraitis in a statement. “Dwayne was an inspirational leader and a true partner in establishing and executing our strategy and mission to serve educators … I’m grateful for the many contributions he made during his 14 years at Horace Mann — he has left an indelible mark on our people and the company.”
Hallman joined Horace Mann in 2003 as senior vice president of finance. Previously he was CFO of Acceptance Insurance Cos. In 2010, he was promoted to chief financial officer at Horace Mann (Best’s News Service, Oct. 7, 2010). He had more than 30 years industry experience.
Conklin has worked in insurance and financial services more than three decades. He joined Horace Mann in 2002 as a senior vice president and controller. Earlier he was a Kemper senior vice president, according to Horace Mann.
Horace Mann Educators Corp. reported about $10.1 billion in total assets and $1.3 billion in shareholders’ equity on a GAAP basis at the end of 2015, according to an A.M. Best Credit Report. Horace Mann offers life insurance, tax-qualified retirement annuities, private-passenger automobile and homeowners insurance to educators and other public school employees in the United States.
Shares of Horace Mann Educators Corp. (NYSE: HMN) were trading the morning of Feb. 6 a $41.92, down 0.53% from the previous close.
